Hello guys! I’m Anne. I do some User Research for Ovi and test phone applications in my spare time :-) Today I’m happy to share with you my first blog post here and equally happy to start my blog journey with a review of Swype.
I’m sure many of you heard of Swype, the finger tracing app that enables faster writing. I also hope many of you tried it and are eager to share their experience here with us. Mine went like this.

I downloaded Swype for my Nokia N8 from the Store and in about five minutes from installing the application I had typed my first message using Swype.

At the beginning, I was pretty reluctant to use it for some reason but after spending a few days playing with it I feel ready to share here my experience.

I used Swype so far for text messaging, tweeting and taking notes.

I also did a small experiment. They say the world record with Swyping is so far 26 words in 26 seconds, which means around 60 words per minute.

I managed to write 31 words in 60 seconds using Swype, which I believe is pretty good. Without Swype, I managed to write 38 words, but many of them were misspelled because of hurrying. Putting speed and correctness together, I’d choose Swype.

My few days with the app would be resumed in a few plus/minus points:

To start with the positive feedback:

  1. Has great prediction of names and hard words like milliseconds (don’t ask me why I typed that);
  2. The installation goes smooth;
  3. You learn how to use it right away, let’s say from the 10th sentence on J;
  4. It has a good variety of languages;
  5. It typed, apart from person names, wait for it… band names! true, not everything I tried. It’s not a Cocorosie or Hot chip fan, but it did hear of Radiohead!
  6. The feeling that your phone guesses what you want to say beforehand is pretty great! A little bit scary, but great;
  7. I just love the blue trace. I love it, adore it, perfect colour.

Now, a few weak things:

  1. It still lack accuracy finding some words that you might expect there and it sometimes replaces them with very far fetched terms. For example, instead of hypocrite, it typed horror. That can come out bad in certain situations, though calling someone horror or hypocrite can generally have the same effect;
  2. It lacks my native language – Romanian (hope this feature will come along soon!);
  3. It can’t type some short forms of words, such as mins instead of minutes; but hey, in fact who needs to shorten up words when the typing goes so fast with it?
  4. It has an issue with finding slang words, which you have to type letter by letter.

But despite this little (and hopefully fixable) drawbacks, I can say, to quote my last text with Swype, This is ducking awesome!
