Ovi has three apps to make your travels easier

Ovi suggests three apps to make your travels easier, including tools for translation as well as ways to document your trip so you can enjoy the experience again and again.

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you’ve had a good week. Where I live, in the northeast United States, we are (practically) trapped in the middle of winter. We’ve had more snow this past month than I can remember seeing in a very long time… Feels like it is time for a vacation. So, let’s pretend I get to go someplace nice and warm, shall we?

And, let’s assume I am going someplace exotic, where English isn’t spoken as the native language. (OK,yes, my family can come on the trip, too.) After packing the essentials, it will be time to make sure my Nokia N8 is packed with the right apps to make my trip a breeze.

For starters, I am going to make sure I have the free Pocket Parrot app by Touch Titans installed. As our reviewer in the Ovi Daily App noted earlier this week, the app for Nokia’s newest touchscreen devices can “translate words and phrases between any of 28 languages.” The app can also speak the translations aloud, so you know how those words and phrases should sound.

If you have any doubts about what this app can do – check out this video demo from the developers, and prepare to believe in the power of the Parrot!

Pocket Parrot is free to download from Store, and it is available for Nokia N8, Nokia C7, and the Nokia C6-01.

And, just for fun, let’s assume my trip requires a quick stop in Paris along the way… I haven’t had much occasion to use the French that I learned once upon a time in school, but I’m willing to study, and brush up. I am going to grab the Basic French app by Genera Mobile,  which provides a handy phrasebook along with animated tutorial style videos to help you with proper pronunciation of your words. The app offers sections to build “critical vocabulary” and quizzes to test what you’ve learned. I should note, however, that this app will be running on my Nokia N97 mini, for compatibility purposes. (I’ve never been accused of traveling light.)

The application supports translations from several languages to French, including: English, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Greek. The Basic French app is available for $0.99 (USD) in Store.

Finally, I am going to want to keep track of my travels, and record the details of this adventure – so I can relive it all in my mind when I am back in snow-covered New England! For that, I need to make sure I have Trip Journal installed and ready to go. With this handy application, you can “document trip experiences, including notes, photos, and waypoints, along with a map overlay showing your journey.” And, as our reviewer noted: “Trip Journal is integrated with Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, YouTube and Twitter, so that you can post your trip for others to see.”

Trip Journal will help me to keep a great record of this adventure that I know I will get to take… someday. It is free to download in Store, and is also compatible with Nokia Symbian OS, S60 5.0 devices, like the Nokia N97 mini.

But for now, it’s back to work! And winter weather!

I hope you have a warm weekend. Take a moment to tell us about the apps you use when you’re traveling using the Comments section below.
