Hi readers,
following our introduction of Rilla, Jeremy and Lisa, we’d like to present you Sua, one of the artists who you can meet at the Ovi by Nokia guided Character Walk, and artist in house at Nokia, working with creative projects for Ovi.

Hi Sua! Could you also tell us and the Ovi Blog readers about yourself? My name is Iosefatu Sua. I’m a graphic designer by trade and a self-taught illustrator/artist. I was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand. I moved to the United States when I was 14 years old and just recently moved again to live in Berlin. Moving so many times has affected me in a way that makes me feel far from home often, and yet I’m not sure where home is anymore. Drawing became a way of coping from the awkwardness of knowing nobody to hangout with during my younger days of moving.

Could you tell us about your exhibition? My exhibition is titled ‘A Journey With Savage’. It is a visual narration, which focuses on a character named Savage. He is something I’ve been trying to figure out artistically for several years now. He’s visually inspired by the stereotype of what early explorers of the Pacific oceans called ‘Savages’, a reference to natives of the newly discovered Micronesian and Polynesian islands. I believe these primitive stereotypes still exist today which is why I’m fascinated in developing his identity. He has many manifestations, for example, sometimes he’s a brave and daring warrior, and sometimes he’s cowardice and weak. For this exhibition, he is a lover and a frightened adventurer. The artwork is mainly ink drawings of the journey, and also some digital and acrylic portraits of Savage in his many manifestations.

We are now a less than a week from the festival to start. What are you mostly looking forward to? I’m just really excited and honored to be part of the Berlin Pictoplasma festival this year. I’m also very grateful that Ovi by Nokia is sponsoring my exhibition. Seeing and meeting other artists from around the world is also a plus and attending some of the lectures and hearing them talk about how they work and think about their art will be a great wealth of inspiration.

-Thank you Sua!

You can visit Sua’s exhibition at Brut Gallery, Torstrasse 68, Berlin, Germany. And what’s more: you can also visit the Store and download his artwork to your Nokia phone! Click the links to download Potpurri Savage, Cream Savage, Blue Savage, Citrus Mocha Savage and Bone Savage.
