The Pictoplasma festival kicks off tomorrow with the opening of Character Walk in Berlin’s city centre. Along the Ovi guided Character Walk there are 25 selected galleries, project spaces and hidden locations in Berlin-Mitte, showcasing the wealth and diversity of today’s character design and art.

Among these are the exhibitions ‘Her Idea’ by Rilla (number 21 on the map, Torstr. 68), the ‘Character Totem’ by Inkygoodness (number 7, Rosenthalerstr. 39 – learn more about the artists from our interview with Lisa), ‘Canis Mortuus Familiaris’ by Jeremy (number 19, Torstr. 100) and ‘A Journey with Savage’ by Sua (number 22, Torstr. 68). In addition, the walk includes exhibitions ‘Dangerous Bees are not Animals’ by Ville Savimaa (number 12, Gartenstr. 1), ‘The Fountain of Clarity’ by Mark Jenkins and Sandra Fernandez (number 23, Schwedter Str. 262), ’That was Then…This is Forever… ‘ by Ryan Quincy, and whole lot more.

In addition to visiting the exhibitions along the walk, why not step also outside the beaten track – as Berlin has a lot more to offer for sure! Here’s our tips how to find 3 hidden gems.

West Berlin Gallery presents the artworks of graphic designer, illustrator and fine artist Sebastien Feraut a.k.a Niark1 in ‘The Hidden Side’ – an exhibition dedicated to the collection of his most recent paintings and originals. Niark1 is known for his graphical style of Characters, set in metropolitan environments. To see this, navigate to Brunnestr. 56. Open until 16 April on Wednesday-Saturday at 11:00-18:00.

Berlin-based artists XOOOOX will present his different approaches as a street artist, abstract painter and photographer in one show. ‘PILGRIM, BABY!’ makes reference to his journey through these various paths of art. Find it at Circleculture Gallery at Gipsstr. 11. Open Tuesday – Saturday 12:00 – 18:00.

In 2010, a temporary art project transformed one of the last untouched, unrenovated buildings left on Linienstr. near the corner of Oranienburger Str.. ‘MMX‘ presented a fine mix of various artists in seven exhibitions. After being closed, the remains of the giant magnetic tape elephant by Tobias Sternberg is still sitting in the tree! See that yourself at Linienstr. 142 / 143.
