Ones to watch. New music on Ovi: Spark

Everybody’s got their favourite artists and bands but everybody loves to make a tip for the top. Recognising a relatively unknown talent and watching them rise to the top of the musical pile has always been running pastime for music fans and tastemakers.

Thing is though, I’m not even going to try and chalk up a few stars of tomorrow. That’s called hype and 1) we all know that’s a great way to jinx great art and 2) Public Enemy said ‘Don’t believe it!’ so I for one am going to go with their good advice and not put it out there in the first place . I’m just going to share some great (and possibly relatively unheard) music that happens to be doing it for me right now. I’m going to to do this ad hoc but I’ll try and keep it regular so consider this part 1 of an unknown quantity.

So let’s see, what have I got? Okay, first up is Spark. I am a sucker for girl fronted pop music! And it’s not just because I’m a guy. Girls, ladies, girl groups, songstresses, whatever best describes music of the female variety for you, just tend to make cleverer music with better twists and more conviction than their male pop counterparts. The boys in pop mostly make gooey music about being nice. I don’t like gooey music about being nice.

Spark

Spark - She'll spin you right round like a record, baby...

So Spark, straight out of Walthamstow via Liverpool has a debut single out called ‘Revolving’. It’s very catchy. Very catchy indeed. I’d be inclined to say it shares certainly qualities with ‘Word Up’ by Cameo which, if you ever write a pop song, is probably one of the ones to aim for to ensure your track is hopefully pretty special. Spark’s previously toured with Marina And The Diamonds (automatic extra points for this fact) and Mike Skinner of the Streets has just remixed the track and made his own self produced video for it he loves it so much. Sounds like a winner to me… Seriously anticipating a great debut album and higher profile tour in the UK this year. Come along for the ride as it looks like Spark’s going to put a fair few folk in a spin!

Check out Mike Skinners remix and video, the original’s in store right now – Enjoy.
