Let us explore Cape Town a bit today! Cape Town is the first African city to be added to Nokia Maps 3D. It is a city with a past. The Portugese used this as a half way point on their voyages to the spice costs of Asia, and the Dutch immigrated to Cape Town in large numbers, which led to colonialization and later racial segregation of South Africa. It is also famous as the location of Nelson Mandela’s first public speech after being released from 27 years of imprisonment.

So what are the main sights around Cape Town? Thanks to maps.nokia.com, Wikipedia and Wikitravel, we now know about them.

If you were an avid watcher of FIFA World Cup 2010, you may recognize the GreenPoint Stadium, which is also known as Cape Town Stadium. This stadium hosted five first round matches, one second round, one quarter-final and one semi-final during the world cup. Ajax Cape Town, a local football club based in Cape Town, used the stadium as their home ground during the 2010-11 Premier Soccer League season.

The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa. Built by the dutch, this pentagonal building is both a sign of the colonial strife and dutch architectural splendor, depending on whom you ask. It currently acts as a museum and has exhibitions around art, military and history.

Built in 1874, Green Point Lighthouse is the oldest light house on the South African coast. It has led many a ship to safety during the heydays of nautical travel.

Table Mountain got it’s name from it’s shape as you can see in the image here. It consists of the greater Table Mountain chain on the peninsula, stretching from the well known Table Mountain behind Cape Town south to Cape Point. In incorporates Table Mountain, Tokai Forest as well as a number of marine protected areas.

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town‘s working harbor is South Africa‘s most-visited destination. Named after Queen Victoria and her second son Prince Albert, it also houses the Nelson Mandela Gateway which offers boat trips to Robben Island where many South African political leaders were imprisoned, the most famous of them being Nelson Mandela.

Clifton Beach is a set of 4 beaches which are frequently used destinations for both locals and tourists. The beaches, which are named from 1st to 4th, are separated by falls of granite boulders and have almost pure white granitic sand. Clifton Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Africa.
