Pre takes top spot on Amazon.com, constrains supply

Amazon Sold Out

Say what you will about how many Pre phones Palm has or hasn’t sold, but they seem to be doing well on Amazon.com. Reader jpquezada pointed out to us that not only does the online mega-retailer list the Pre as the #1 bestselling smartphone (as of this writing), but Amazon also warns prospective buyers that the Pre will be "in stock on October 9, 2009," implying either a stock shortage or a complete sell out.

Considering that the Pre page itself says that the phone is in stock, it would seem to be the former implication (or possibly an error on Amazon's part). Either way, that high ranking in the smartphone sales charts is more than likely spurred on by the fact that you can get the Pre for $99.99 through Amazon, saving a good $50 over more traditional outlets like Sprint itself.
