This week we have a very nice review of Dubai from Lukas, our world bike traveler. Actually, this is the best report I’ve had so far from the United Arab Emirates, except of course the hilarious movie Sex and the City 2 ![]()
Anyway, I think that if it’s difficult to comprehend a city, without visiting it, this is even more true for Dubai. Lukas did a great job here: I really had the feeling that Dubai can be a really fun place… if money is available
A little bit like Las Vegas (which I love, btw)…

When I told one English cycling couple, that I was going to Dubai, they were surprised. Why would a biker want to go there? It isn’t a place for low budget cycling. They themselves were biking to Japan through all the -stan countries, as many many other bikers do. That is why i got odd looking eyes at me every time i mentioned Dubai in my itinerary.
Four years ago, when I was backpacking around the world, I wanted to visit Dubai. However, my trip in the Middle East got unexpected twist: I fell in love with a Danish girl, and flew back to Europe. This time I kept my heart at my German made bicycle only, and finally managed to visit United Arab Emirates. And I’m happy it didn’t work out in 2006 , because back then Burj Khalifa (highest building in the world) was still the size of Eiffel Tower and Dubai metro wasn’t running.
It is true that Dubai is not a place for low budget travelers, so even with an arranged free accommodation my daily budget was around €15. This included fastfood, transportation, infancy dinner out as well as some free marvelings at fountain shows and speechless architecture. It excluded other amazing activity Dubai had to offer such as (just to name a few) water park, winterland, balloon ride, desert safari, horse races and of course hi-tech elevators up to the highest tower ever built. To give you examples of how money can be an advantege (for big spenders who haven’t visited Dubai yet): you can add €60 to a €20-ticket, to pass the line in Burj Khalifa, or stay in a hotel room at Burj Al Arab for €1600 a night.
Yup, I could’ve spent my whole one-year around-the-World budget in Dubai, made a last post for the Blog and sold my bicycle for the return ticket back to Finland.
Luckily I kept my dreams were they belong and was able to continue my tour to Oman (another amazing place to visit) and from Muscat to take a flight to Mumbai. Just missed Barack Obama on his Asia tour
