The Pictoplasma festival, which we wrote about few weeks ago, is the world’s leading and largest celebration of contemporary character culture bringing together artists, designers, illustrators and art collectives. The Character Walk 2011 is the Ovi by Nokia guided tour that invites the general public and the numerous international festival attendees, creatives and fans to over 25 selected galleries, project spaces and hidden locations in Berlin-Mitte, showcasing the wealth and diversity of today’s Character design and art.

We had the chance to catch up with a few of the artists and are happy to introduce them to you already before the festival. Here’s our first interview – please be introduced to Rilla Alexander.

Hi Rilla! Could you tell us a bit about yourself? I am an Australian picture-maker and storyteller who lives in Berlin. I am also a member of design and illustration group Rinzen

Could you tell us a bit about your exhibition? I have written and illustrated an all-ages picture book about ideas and procrastination – featuring my alter-ego Sozi.

My exhibition will feature screenprints from the book – as well as original drawings, wooden and woolen toys, resin figures and a life-sized sculpture of Sozi. During the Pictoplasma Character Walk, I will also be reading the book while the audience eats googly-eyed cookies!

What are you mostly looking forward to from the festival? I introduced Sozi – and talked about her book – when I spoke at the very first Pictoplasma in 2004. I then procrastinated for a very long time! So I am VERY proud to be finished the book at last and to be able to show it to old (and new) friends.

 -Thanks Rilla!

Everyone, you have the chance to see Rilla’s artwork at BOLD gallery during Pictoplasma festival on 6-10 April 2011. You can also  follow Rilla on Twitter and Sozi on Twitter and Facebook.
