This is a story about change, about how mobile email has the potential to bridge the digital divide. In Bangladesh, there are approximately 54 million mobile subscribers out of a 160 million total population. However, the country has an internet penetration rate of well below 1%. In an effort to get those mobile subscribers online, Nokia decided to offer a solution to all people in need of internet: Ovi Mail, a free, secure, and easy to use email account – for both phone and the web.

Nokia introduced Ovi Mail in Bangladesh to equip millions of potential consumers and first time email users with their first digital identity. Together with operators we set out to deliver the best solution for consumers. Several activities to raise awareness and educate consumers took place at retail stores, from vans, on several campuses etc. with very promising results. In just 20 days of presence on campuses, around 11.000 consumers got a new Ovi Mail account. This is followed by activities designed to build up an Ovi community, work with content partners, involve NGOs (non-governmental organizations) and universities as well as drive education and activate email accounts for migrant workers. We have all reasons to check in again in the near future to see how mobile email impacts consumers’ lives in Bangladesh – and elsewhere.
