Overwhelmed with T-Mobile 3G devices, back to my N97

Sorry about the low posting going on this week folks, T-Mobile USA went a little crazy and released two new high end devices supporting their ever increasing 3G data network and as a customer who waited for years for 3G I couldn’t resist diving into both devices. The two devices were the T-Mobile myTouch 3G Google Android device and the HTC Touch Pro2. I couldn’t resist and bought myself the myTouch 3G for $200 as well and have been playing with it quite a bit over the last couple weeks. However, I have to admit it felt good to put my SIM back into my N97 and fire it up for a few reasons.

The myTouch 3G is a sleeker piece of hardware than the T-Mobile G1 and the longer battery life and double the amount of storage space help considerably. The device has a capacitive display like the iPhone and Palm Pre so it really is a lot of fun to use. However, you definitely do notice it starts to slow down when you load up too many apps and this is especially noticed in the onscreen keyboard. I am doing pretty well with just an onscreen keyboard, but I think a hardware QWERTY is in my blood and am not sure I can hang with a device without one. There are lots of very good apps for the Android platform and they have a wonderful Android Market that lets me redownload all my purchases onto a new phone when I switch, without any hassle at all.

It felt like I was coming home though when I turned on my N97 and this is such a solid piece of hardware I didn’t want to put it down. Gravity is awesome and blows away any Twitter app I have found on the Android platform. The Babbler Facebook app is better on Android and I would like to see a richer client on the S60 platform, particularly video upload support. The Android platform is weak in media still and movies, podcasts, and songs all sound better on the N97. Not to mention the much better photo and video capture capability. I will continue to use my myTouch 3G off and on (it does have T-Mobile 3G), but plan to carry my N97 around as well and use it even with the EDGE wireless connection.
