Nokia reader – one step closer to your favourite feeds

What do you guys do while riding the public transport daily? I always have a book with me and occasionally I listen to music, but I somehow prefer being connected to the world rather than to some headphones.

However, I think I just got a new little toy for my short and long S-bahn journeys. And for the early coffees in the morning.

It’s called Nokia reader: an app that uses the RSS reader to manage your news feeds, pushing your favourite ones to the home screen and thus giving you easier access to what you’re interested in.

For now the app is available only as experimental. The developers want to test how push notification function on Symbian so don’t forget that some strange things may occur due to that.

My first testing of the reader happened like this: Monday morning I left my headphones and book at home and armed myself only with the reader as means of occupying my time in the S-bahn to work. The plan was the following: no other distractions, today I shall read from the Nokia N8 screen rather than from my dusty books and see how the reader goes. Well, the first experience was a fail. The reader had me sign in with my Ovi account for 3 times and then it kept loading the app but with no result.

So on Monday I ended up being one of those people who stare at others in the public transport. On my way back home, another train, another hour, I tried the reader again, but it wouldn’t load then either. I got home determined to give my feedback to the Nokia Betalabs, hoping to contribute to the improvement of the app. I know how valuable any opinion is to these guys so I encourage you to speak to them and post on Betalabs any experience you may have had with a Nokia app.

However, Tuesday morning I decided to give it one more shot, having in mind that it IS an experimental version. This time I had my book with me as well, but I had no use for it. The reader loaded immediately (without asking for my user data any longer, because it had it saved already) and started showing me my selected feeds.

I like this word, feeds, it’s exactly what the Nokia reader or any other good RSS does: feeds our curiosity and info hunger with the things you add up on the menu.

So I usually have some international news for breakfast, some blogging for lunch and some mysterious/interesting articles for dinner, such as the Wikileaks super secret cave under the streets of Stockholm or the out-of-body experiences produced by ketamine. You know, light reading for the evening.

We’ve been together since a few days, already in good and in bad. And I decided I want to share some more time with my Nokia reader. It gives me the news I’m interested in and makes journeys seem faster.

So keep the app in mind and if you’re looking for a nice reader to sort your daily press, try it out. The main features of Nokia reader are the following, as it’s described here as well:

  • uses push notifications
  • content directory
  • home screen widget
  • Supports Nokia Account

Give it a shot and tell me what you think of it! And I’ll also be waiting for new good online publication ideas to add to my subscriptions :) .
