I have seen comments on various blogs about the Nokia N8 and push email and want to make sure you have the correct information. We designed a push email messaging experience on Nokia N8, but we did not want to restrict your choice of mailbox so that’s why you can set up  different types of mailboxes on our latest Symbian devices.

The client on these devices is designed to look the same no matter which of these mailboxes you’re using. If you want to check if you have push functionality enabled, you need to start by looking at the synchronisation settings. It can be a bit tricky but here are some tips:

Mail for Exchange

• If you picked Mail for Exchange in the first setup step, then that’s what you get. Your mailbox’s Settings menu has three options. In English these are Mailbox, What to sync and When to sync.

Messaging Service

• For other email addresses, your mailbox uses the Messaging service if and only if you accepted its terms & conditions as a step in the mailbox setup sequence.

• If you don’t remember doing this then there are a couple of other ways to tell. The Settings menu for the Messaging mailbox has only two options (in English, Synchronization and Account settings). Under the first item (Synchronization) the frequency settings should start with the push option (Soonest) and continue with options for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and so on.

POP/ IMAP

• If you declined the Messaging service terms & conditions (or didn’t even see that prompt, in certain other circumstances related to service availability in particular countries), you are probably using a direct POP/IMAP mailbox. There are three options under Settings (Mailbox settings, Sync content, Sync frequency) and the first options under the Sync frequency list are 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, …

There are definite benefits to using the Messaging service which include push notifications at soonest availability with a more efficient data connection to save battery life. If you would like to start using the Messaging service to access your account, just delete your current mailbox and set it up again as a new account. Remember to accept the terms and conditions when you set up the account.

I hope these tips clarify to set up your push email on your Nokia N8 or recent Symbian device. I have been using push email on my Nokia C7-00 for the past couple of months and love the flexibility that comes with being able to change the settings while travelling to help save battery time for example.
