All our fans have interesting stories to tell: their first Nokia, their experiences with Ovi, how they interact with the Blog. This is the reason why we have started interviewing them. But today I would like to introduce David from All About Symbian and All About MeeGo with a true, and personal, Connecting People story…
Some time ago our friend @kreativtek was looking for some help for his homework in electrostatic and he specifically asked me and David for suggestions. We were obviously able to help him out (I wish I had social media power at school too) but most importantly David and I virtually met for the first time :-)
Now, if you want to know more about David, just continue reading: this is his interview!

-Pino (@haikus)

Who are you and what do you do? I’m David Gilson (@davidgilson) and I’m currently a writer and podcaster with All About Symbian and All About MeeGo. I started out in academic research, and I hold a Masters degree in Quantum Theory. My career plans changed when I became ill with a condition known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (which desperately needs more medical research).

What makes you passionate about what you do? Lots of reasons! First of all, I am an unashamed geek, and I’m a firm believer in convergence and how ubiquitous mobile computing can enhance everyone’s lives. Also, I know how much of a big decision it can be to choose the right device for YOU, because in the information age, these are some of the most important tools we can have. So I like to write in a way that gives people the information they need.

What do you like to do on your spare time? I like to think of the topics I write about as my hobbies, but when I need to unplug, I read e-books or listen to stand-up comedy. I’m currently reading Do androids dream of electric sheep?. Also, getting a new phone in to review is always a great excuse for me to dabble in a bit of photography!

How did you find out about us? I found out about you via the wonders of Twitter! That seems to be the modern way to spread content by word of mouth these days. As part of my research in exploring the Nokia world for my writing, you guys are in my Google Reader along with Nokia Conversations and the Symbian blog.

How long have you been a Ovi/Nokia fan? It feels like longer, but I got my first Nokia smartphone in 2008. But back then, Ovi didn’t have a Store, and Maps was called Nokia Maps, so I’ve seen Ovi grow up a lot in the last couple of years :-)

What do you like most about Ovi/Nokia? I find it interesting how Nokia do things differently to the rest of the world. Also, there is a lot of Nokia bashing, especially in the U.S., and so I like how Nokia sticks with its own way of doing things, in spite of all that criticism. Time will tell whether they’ve been right to or not.

What was your very first Nokia device? My first Nokia device was the Nokia E51 in 2008. For years before that I’d been using the phone+PDA type of set up, so it made sense to go for a business/productivity orientated smart phone, and the Nokia E51 was a great cross-over device for me into the world of smart phones.

Which device do you use right now? Just now, my SIM card lives in my Nokia E72. Of all the phones I’ve reviewed, it is the most useful and the best jack of all trades. I often switch over to a Nokia N900, which I have on extended loan.

What’s your favourite thing you’ve downloaded from Store? Why? Without a doubt, Nimbuzz, to which I’m a recent convert. I regularly use Facebook chat and GTalk, so it’s great to have those together in the same application. It’s sad that Skype decided to stop supporting third party services like Nimbuzz.

What were you looking for the last time you used Maps? On my way home from Nokia World 2010, I was meeting a friend near Kings Cross railway station, and my Nokia E72 easily guided me to the meeting place!

What would you like tell us here at Ovi by Nokia? First of all, I’d like to say keep up the good work! I’m a big fan of Store and Maps, and I look forward to them both being developed even further. I’d also like to say that I hope the PIM services will make it easier for users to import and export their data.
