Hi, my name is Sameer Goel and I joined the Emerging Markets Service group based in India as Product Manager a few months back.
Today I would like to introduce you to Nokia Mobile Communities, our attempt to provide a complete communities experience on the mobile phone without a dependency on the web or PC.
This is particular interesting for countries like India and other emerging markets where the number of mobile phones users is 8 times the number of internet users.
The product has two main flavors – Conversations and Streams. Conversations is ideal for group chats with your friends, family and colleagues. Streams allow you to follow people and topics that matter to you (e.g. career tips, local news, Bollywood stars).
The whole communities experience without internet connection: you can chat with multiple people at the cost of one text message. As long as your phone supports SMS you are ready to go!
Nokia Mobile Communities can be downloaded for free from the Store or from Nokia Beta Labs where you can leave your feedback and contribute to its further development.
The client is currently available only in India and in English language and has been tested extensively on Nokia 2700, 5130, 6700, 7210, C3, C5, E63, E71 and E72. It is also available for similar S40 and S60 devices with screen resolution 240×320 or 320×240 pixels such as Nokia X3, 7100, 6500, 3120 and 2730 etc. While functionality is supported for all Nokia devices, user experience may be broken due to unsupported resolution; support for additional devices and resolutions is on its way. However, support for touch devices will be available in a later version of the product.
