An introduction – Nigel from the Music team

“The beauty of songwriting is that any human being can do it, and they learned how to do it their way. One minute someone was sitting in the living room, having a cup of coffee, the next they picked up the guitar and wrote something from nothing. That’s a miraculous event. That’s what keeps me going”. – Jarvis Cocker, lead singer of the band Pulp.

I’ll be honest; I dislike Pulp quite a lot, but I do like a good, old fashioned, sensible quote, and this is what fascinates and intrigues me about music. How a person, or a group of people, can create songs from thin air, and how they are delivered in so many beautifully different ways.

I couldn’t say specifically which styles music I like; I simply like good music, over various genres. There is a constant within music that I adore, but what that is, I haven’t figured out yet, and most likely never will. That rush of excitement, those depths of sadness, the exhilaration, the loneliness disguised as comfort, the vulnerability, the joy – it’s all too grand to comprehend. Very much like the Universe, music is infinite, ever growing; when you travel deep into it, there lays the mystery.

I’m Nigel. I’ve worked at Nokia in the Music team since November 2008. I’ve written and played music since the Spring of 1997 after I bought the worst and cheapest bass guitar you could imagine, from a catalogue, and set about starting a band with my next door neighbour. From there, the obsession with music rooted and is what still drives me today.

The first post from me is an interview I did with Lissie. If you’re not aware of her or her music, head over to my post and find out more.

I hope you enjoy everything else I have to share with you from here on out. And, finally, hello to you all!
