Hi everyone,
Today I added 5 new Yahoo! friends to my Chat buddy list, and I don’t even have a Yahoo! account 
How? Because we’ve completed the rollout of the Chat powered by Yahoo! service!
Now we are officially powered by Yahoo!, and although there are more improvements to come I’ve pulled together a short Q&A on what’s available now the transition to Yahoo! is complete. If there is something I haven’t covered here, then feel free to ask away in the comments.
What can I do now with Chat powered by Yahoo! that I couldn’t do before?
The main advantage is the ability to add Yahoo! Messenger friends to your Chat friend list. The way to do this is by going to Options > Add Friend, selecting Other domain and then entering your friend’s Yahoo! Messenger ID (i.e. friend@yahoo.com). Once they accept your friend request, their Yahoo! ID will appear with the rest of your Chat friend list. Now you can see when your friend is online and start a conversation.
Why can’t I log in to Chat through the application?
The most common reason that you will not be able to log in to your Chat account in the application is that you have not accepted the new Terms of Service (TOS). If you’re not sure if you have accepted the TOS yet, click on this link and enter your Ovi username and password. Once you have accepted the new TOS, your account data will be migrated, and you will be able to log in to your account.
Why can’t I find Chat on my phone?
While there are some phones for which we don’t offer a Chat application today, the team here is working very hard to change that situation. We recently announced that we are indeed working on a Chat application that will run on Symbian^3 and touch-enabled S60 5th edition Nokia phones (follow this link for more information). We will share information about other Nokia phones as it becomes available.
I know one of my friends is on-line so why does he appear as off-line?
You should be able to see if your friend is on-line if they are using the Chat application. However, if you are using the Chat application to log into Chat powered by Yahoo! and your friend is using the Contacts application, you will not be able to see when she is available to chat or to send her a friend request. And conversely, if you are using the Contacts application, you will not be able to see or chat with any of your friends who have started using the Chat application.
Why don’t I see my Yahoo! Messenger friends in my friend list when I log in to Chat?
While it is now possible to add Yahoo! Messenger friends to your Chat friend list, your Ovi account and Yahoo! account will remain separate from each other. You do have the ability to add all of your Yahoo! Messenger friends into your Chat friend list so that you can see that entire list at one time, but you will have to add each of these friends yourself rather than having them automatically populated.
So now you can use Ovi on your Nokia phone to keep in constant contact with anyone on Yahoo! Messenger! We hope you will have fun staying in touch with all of your Ovi and Yahoo! friends this holiday season. And stay tuned for more updates in the New Year…
