Since I purchased my Nokia N97 back in June until now I have posted positive and negative thoughts on the device and admit to sometimes getting frustrated and focusing on the negative. However, as I keep grabbing the device and going back to using it I find it to be a very good piece of hardware that should just keep getting better with updates. Ewan Spence posted a good article that works to provide us with a dose of reality on the Perception of Nokia.

The Nokia N97 is doing well in sales and by all accounts in a very successful product for Nokia. It is a bit tougher to see this from our US perspective because we paid $700 for the new device and still see it priced over $600. This price point puts the N97 into the power user who usually loads it up and pushes it too so a larger majority here may be seeing low RAM issues than your “normal” user.

My N97 is very usable and the low RAM is my only issue because I do not like how apps close in the background so others can run. This should be fixed with the version 2 update though and if I use the N97 under “normal” conditions it performs flawlessly. The phone call quality is perfect and it is a very well constructed piece of hardware that shows no degradation from my 4 feet concrete drop. How many other smartphone can handle this kind of a fall?

I know there are some extremely smart and capable people at Nokia and even though their smartphone market share has been reduced over the last several quarters it may have more to do with new operating systems flooding the market rather than just a decline in popularity of Nokia. The N900 shows they can still come up with innovative products and as they transition into using Symbian Foundation-based devices I am sure all of us Nokia fans will be pleased with future products.
